
On Saturday, March 5th, John Maloch and I were
privileged to host a dinner for four crew members from the aircraft carrier USS
Carl Vinson. This is a very large,
nuclear powered Nimitz class carrier.

The last time we had sailors over for dinner, we had three
young men on their first tour (see http://www.herbhost.com/Singapore/lincoln/lincoln.htm). This time we had four gentlemen who have each
made a career of the Navy. If I recall
correctly, their experience ranged from 17 years to 22 years. All are chiefs and hold significant
responsibility on the carrier. We had a
great conversation about life in the Navy, the challenges that the

We had a fine dinner, cooked by Grace as usual, consisting of corn on the cob, fried potatoes and parsnips, broccoli salad, a great salsa, chicken, ribs, and sausage. We could tell that we were with more senior sailors who had to get up in the morning; there was lots of beer left after their visit. There was time for an after dinner cigar, however.
Just having dinner and conversation with these men was gift enough for John and me, but we are also given a variety of mementos from the USS Carl Vinson. We are very appreciative of the thoughtfulness of the guys, and the hat will be a great conversation piece on the golf course.
